3. Newcomb(e)2 French (Joseph1) was born in School Green, Wethersfield, Essex 3 February 1829. Newcomb(e) died 2 May 1912 in Brick Kiln Lane, Blackmore End, Wethersfield, at 83 years of age. Copy certificate dated 12 April 2005 sent to me by Maureen French. Death registered by daughter Selina French of same address. The family bible also records a death of a Newcombe French in June 1903 but it is apparently not this person. Newcombe William French died June 1901 so perhaps the bible entry related to him but has the wrong year.

He married Elizabeth Webb in Wethersfield, Essex?, September 1849. Free BMD site shows entry. ref. Volume 12 page 33 in Braintree district.

Elizabeth was born in Wethersfield, Essex 1830. Maiden name confirmed in 1861 Census as her brother Joseph Webb is listed.

Elizabeth died June 1901 in Wethersfield, Essex?, at 70 years of age. Details taken from family bible. Free BMD site shows an entry for June 1901 quarter Ref. 4A 384 in Braintree district. Age at death is 71 which ties in with known information. 1911 Census describes Newcombe as a widower.

He was listed as head of household in the 1911 UK Census in Near Pond, Wethersfield, Essex. RG14PN10393 RG78PN550 RD201 SD1 ED5 SN55 shows Newcombe 82 widower an old age pensioner and daughter Selina 58 single. He has written that he had 9 children 3 of whom are dead but this information has been crossed through.

She was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in Boultwoods, Woolney Green, Stisted, Braintree, Essex. RG12 Piece 1422 Folio 88 Page 3. Ambrose aged 30 (should be 32) an agricultural labourer and Jane 30 lodgers with Walter Mott a farmer.

She was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in Rayne Hatch, Stisted, Essex. RG13 Piece 1723, Folio 90, Page 12 shows Ambrose 43 a herdsman on farm and Jane 43 and Edith E Dancombe niece 12.

RG14PN10401 RG78PN551 RD201 SD2 ED6 SN9 shows Ambrose 53 waggoner on farm and Jane 53 married for 31 years both born Wethersfield. Instead of the census being completed by Ambrose it is signed by Frank Kistruck of Bocking. I have ascertained that he was an Evangelist at the Congregational Church so presumably Ambrose and his wife could not write. The census shows they had no children.

child 14 v. Mary French was born in Wethersfield, Essex 1860. Family bible shows a Mary French born 1 March 1858. It is assumed that she is a sibling of Samuel French. The 1861 Census says Mary is 6 months old. 1871 Census says born Wethersfield. Mary died 1943 in Beaumont-cum-Moze, Essex, at 83 years of age. Information from Peter Knights-Branch. Her body was interred 1943 in Wethersfield Congregational Ch. Inforamtion from Peter Knights-Branch. She married James (or John or James John) Carter in Wethersfield, Essex, 19 November 1880. Braintree district Volum 4A Page 798. This shows the groom as John as does the 1881 Census.

Volume 4A Page 1455. The official marriage e ntry shows 2 entries, one for George Teagen and the other for George Teager both with the same reference. No trace of either in 1911 Census s o cannot confirm his surname.
