14. William Leadbitter4 Chapman (Robert5, William6) was born in Heighington, Co. Durham 9 October 1842. Free BMD site has an entry Ref. Darlington Volume 24 Page 39 with the m iddle name as Leadbetter. William died 7 January 1932 in Worksop district, Nottinghamshire, at 89 years of age. Ancestry.co.uk has a copy of the entry in the March quarter Ref. Volume 7B Page 58. Age at death was 89. Diary of WGD Chapman records his death at 2.30 a.m. on 7 January. His body was interred 11 January 1932 in Blyth, Nottingham ?. Diary of WGD Chapman records going to funeral.

He married twice. He married Annie Lees in Hurworth Parish Church, Co. Durham, 11 June 1867. Copy certificate issued 29 July 2005. William is described as being of full age and butler. His father Robert is also described as a butler. Annie is described as being of full age without any occupation. Her father John is described as a groom. As William is described as a bachelor it is assumed that his other marriage was after this one. William's middle name is not shown.

Annie was born in Piercebridge, Co. Durham about 1845. Annie was the daughter of John Lees and Sarah ?. Annie died December 1885 in Darlington, Co. Durham, at 40 years of age. She was listed as head of household in the 1851 census in Hurworth, Co. Durham. HO107 Piece 2382, Folio 136, Page 23 shows Sarah Lees married 45 dress maker born Piercebridge, Joseph 21 labourer born Piercebridge, Sarah 19 ( unable to make out occupation) born ? Yorkshire, Mary 14 (occupation po ssibly servant) born Piercebridge, John 9 scholar born Piercebridge and Ann 5 scholar born Piercebridge. Only Ann has been rec orded on my software.

She was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in Croft Lane, Hurworth, Co. Durham. RG10 Piece 4885, Folio 92, Page 38 shows William aged 28 a butler, Ann ie 25 and Emily 1.

She was listed as head of household in the 1881 census in Croft Road, Hurworth, Co. Durham. RG11 Piece 4890, Folio 119, Page 49 shows Annie a butler's wife aged 3 5 born Piercebridge. Emily is aged 11, Edith 7 and Herbert 3, all born a t Hurworth. Annie's husband William is at his employer's address. Herbe rt is shown as William in the 1891 Census.

He married Mary Ann Withers in St Mary's, Walthamstow, Essex, 12 September 1889. Copy certificate issued 11 April 2008. Information from the Chapman family had led us to believe that his bride's name was Bacon. William is a widower 46 a butler, father Robert bo occupation. Mary is 40 a spinster, no occupation, father Henry deceased. William's address is Pilmore Hall, Hurworth and Mary's is Gaywood Road, Walthamstow. William's middle name is shown as Leadbetter rather than Leadbitter.

Mary was born in Froxfield, Wiltshire March 1850. Mary was the daughter of Henry Withers and Ann Caswell. Mary died 8 August 1936 in Worksop district, Nottinghamshire, at 86 years of age. She was listed as head of household in the 1851 census in Froxfield, Wiltshire. HO 107 Piece 1686, Folio 278, Page 10 shows Henry 30 shoemaker, Ruth 40, David 7, Sarah 5, Elizabeth 3 and Mary Ann 1.

She was listed as head of household in the 1861 census in Froxfield, Wiltshire. RG9 Piece 725, Folio 96 Page 5 shows Henry (transcribed as Hanery) 41 shoemaker, Ruth 51, Eliza 13, Mary Ann 11. Henry, Eliza and Mary Ann all born Froxfield. Ruth born All Cannings, Wiltshire.

She was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in Oxford House, Tavistock Road, Croydon, Surrey. RG10 Piece 844, Folio 18, Page 30 shows Mary A Withers 21 a nurse born Froxfield, Wilts. Her employers are William & Harriet Rowlan.

She was listed as head of household in the 1881 census in Imperial Hotel, Torquay, Devon. RG11 Piece 2169, Folio 90, Page 3 shows Mary Ann Withers 31 a visitor at the Imperial Hotel. It says she is married and was born at Froxfield; Chut Worcestershire having been deleted. She was undoubtedly a servant but it cannot be determined who was her employer.

She was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in Croft Lane, Hurworth, Co. Durham. RG12 Piece 4045, Folio Page 26 shows William a domestic butler aged 46, his second wife Mary Anne 41 and son William 13 & Albert 9. In the 1881 Census William was shown as Herbert.

She was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in 5 Osnaburgh Street, St Pancras district, London. RG13 Piece 130, Folio 80 Page 3 shows Mary A Chapman aged 49 as a boar der. Her occupation is 'living on own means'. Also there is her step-da ughter Emily Deacon aged 31, also a boarder and living on own means.

She was listed as head of household in the 1911 UK Census in Blyth, Rotherham. RG14PN20244 RG78PN1212 RD427 SD2 ED3 SN133 shows William Leadbitter 69 retired butler born Heighington and Mary Ann 59 born Froxfield married 20 years. William is shown as having 4 children 2 of whom are dead.

Mary's will was probated in Nottingham, 30 October 1936. Probate granted at Nottingham to Rev Albert Lees Chapman. Effects pŁ1146.5.0.

He was listed as head of household in the 1861 census in Rectory, Hurworth, Co. Durham. RG09 Piece 3683 Folio 39 Page 1. William is a footman aged 18 working for Rev. R.H. Williamson, Rector of Hurworth.

He was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in Croft Lane, Hurworth, Co. Durham. RG10 Piece 4885, Folio 92, Page 38 shows William aged 28 a butler, Annie 25 and Emily 1.

He was listed as head of household in the 1881 census in Pilmore House, Hurworth, Co. Durham. RG11 Family tradition says that William Chapman was a butler. The 1881 c ensus shows him as a butler aged 40 in Hurworth. William is working for A lfred Backhouse a Quaker banker. Pilmore House or Hall now known as Rockliffe Park is the home of Middlesbrough Football Club Training G round. William's wife is at Croft Road, Hurworth.

He was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in Croft Lane, Hurworth, Co. Durham. RG12 Piece 4045, Folio Page 26 shows William a domestic butler aged 46 , his second wife Mary Anne 41 and son William 13 & Albert 9. In the 18 81 Census William was shown as Herbert.

He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in Berry Hill, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. RG13 Piece 3140, Folio 132, Page 13 shows a W L Chapman aged 54 a dome stic servant born Heighton (which should be Heighington), Co Durham. Hi s relationship to the head of the household is indecipherable but peopl e at the Dorset Family History Society think iti s an abbreviation for d omestic servant. It is known that his daughter Emily had connections wi th Nottinghamshire so this is undoubtedly the correct person. His secon d wife and daughter Emily are in London perhaps because Edith Annie, Emily's sister was in hospital t here and died on 12 April 1901..

He was listed as head of household in the 1911 UK Census in Blyth, Rotherham. RG14PN20244 RG78PN1212 RD427 SD2 ED3 SN133 shows William Leadbitter 69 r etired butler born Heighington and Mary Ann 59 born Froxfield married 20 years. William is shown as having 4 children 2 of whom are dead.

William's will was probated 19 February 1932. Probate granted to widow Mary Chapman. Estate pŁ1180.0s.3d.

Volume 3C Page 501. Aged 91 at death. Exact date from diary of WGD Chapman. Her body was interred 31 October 1960 in Blyth, Nottingham. Exact date from diary of WGD Chapman. She married Arthur Deacon in Darlington district, Co. Durham, 1898. Letter from her in 1948 re her golden wedding party. Free BMD site has entries for both parties at Darlington district ref 10a/37 in the March quarter.

Arthur was born in Darlington district, Co. Durham September 1867. Arthur was the son of Ralph Deacon and Mary ?. Arthur died 7 October 1951 in Worksop district, Nottinghamshire, at 84 years of age. He was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in 6 Banks Terrace, Hurworth, Co. Durham. RG10 Piece 4885, Folio 96, Page 4546 shows Ralph 48 waiter (lodging house keeper), Mary 42, Lucy 11, Emily 7 and Arthur 3.

He was listed as head of household in the 1881 census in 6 Banks Terrace, Hurworth, Co. Durham. RG11 Piece 4890, Folio 119, Page 50 shows Ralph 58 hotel waiter born Catterick, Yorkshire, Mary 51 lodging house keeper born Otterburn, Northumberland and Arthur 13 born Hurworth.

She was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in Guisborough, Yorkshire. RG12 Piece Folio Page shows Emily aged 22 a ladies maid. Because of software limitations she is shown in error as head of household.

She was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in 5 Osnaburgh Street, St Pancras district, London. RG13 Piece 130, Folio 80 Page 3 shows Mary A Chapman aged 49 as a boar der. Her occupation is 'living on own means'. Also there is her step-da ughter Emily Deacon aged 31, also a boarder and living on own means. We have a postcard from Bernard to his mother. her address is 35 East B ank, Stamford Hill, London, N16.

child 16 ii. Edith Annie Chapman was born in Pilmore, 6 Croft Road, Hurworth, Co. Durham 1 July 1873. Copy certificate issued 3 December 2012 shows father William Chapman ( no middle name) butler and mother Annie Chapman formerly Lees. Edith died 12 April 1901 in University College Hospital, Pancras district, London, at 27 years of age. Copy certificate issued 10 December 2012 shows Edith Annie 27 ladies m aid of Padbury Lodge, near Buckingham who died of tuberculosis peritoni tis 3 months foecal fistula and exhaustion. The informant is M. A Chapm an mother-in-law present at death who resides at Berry Hill Hall. Mansf ield. She is W L Chapman's second wife so should have been described as s tep-mother not mother-in-law.

Emily is aged 11, Edith 7 and Herbert 3, all born a t Hurworth. Annie's husband William is at his employer's address. Herbe rt is shown as William in the 1891 Census.

She was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in Friars Wynd, Richmond, Yorkshire. RG12 Piece 4036, Folio 79, Page 15 shows an Edith Chapman aged 16 born a t Darlington. The 1881 Census says she was born at Hurworth which is near Darlington so this may be the correct person. There is no record o f her death between 1881 and 1891 and she was not at the home address in 1891. The 1911 Census for her father says that he had 4 children 2 o f whom are dead.

She was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in University College Hospital, Pancras district, London. RG13 Piece 138, Folio 173, Page 4 shows Edith Chapman (transcribed as E dish Chapinan with a correction posted) aged 27 a patient. her place of b irth is shown as Darlington, Co. Durham.

child 17 iii. Herbert William Chapman was born in Hurworth, Co. Durham June 1877. Place and year of birth taken from 1881 Census. Free BMD has an entry Darlington Ref. Volume 10A Page28. Herbert died about 8 April 1895 in Darlington district, Co. Durham, at approximately 17 years of age. Free BMD has an entry Ref. Volume 10A Page 2 for a Herbert William Cha pman aged 17. Letter dated Monday 8 April 1895 from J G Harbottle, stoc kbroker to Mrs Chapman offers sympathy on his death. He had spoken to s omeone on the Saturday who said he was improvIng. So death must have oc curred between 6th and 8th possibly on the 8th.
