2. John2 Richardson (William1) was born in Culgaith or Culgarth, Cumberland 31 October 1816. Birthplace ties in with 1861 Census. John died December 1893 in Auckland district, Co. Durham, at 77 years of age. Free BMD has an entry Ref. Volume 10A Page 129 for a John Richardson aged 75. He was 74 in the 1891 Census and should therefore have been 76 at death. There is also a John Richardson aged 85 who died in the March quarter 1901 in the Auckland district.

He married Mary Gargett in Barnard Castle Register Office, Co. Durham, 6 May 1846. Copy certificate issued 25 November 2008 shows both parties of full age. John's occupation is countryman and his father is William Richardson also a countryman. Mary has no occupation and no father is shown. John's address is Langley Dale and Mary's is West Holme near Winstone. Neither John nor Mary could write so they made their marks.

Mary was born in Middleton-in-Teesdale, Co. Durham about 1825. Birthplace and year taken from 1861 Census Mary was the daughter of Joshua ? Gargett.

Mary died 17 June 1880 in Copley Lane, Lynesack, Co. Durham, at 54 years of age. Copy certificate issued 10 February 2009. Aged 54 1/2 years, wife of John a farmer. Death registered by son William Richardson of same address. Husband John is described as a widower in the 1881 Census.

She was christened in Romaldkirk, Yorkshire, 4 July 1826. Mormons have an entry showing parents Joshua and Mary. I cannot be certain this christening is for 'our' Mary Garget. She gives her place of birth as Middleton-in-Teesdale on census returns which is near Romaldkirk. It should be noted that when she married there was no father's name on the marriage certificate. She was listed as head of household in the 1841 census in Corn Park, Cotherstone, Romaldkirk, Yorkshire. HO107, Piece 1247, Folio 5, Page 5 shows Joshua 41, Richard 18, Ann 16, Mary 14 and Joshua 12. Joshua Senior is shown as being joint farmer with Dorothy Wilkinson

She was listed as head of household in the 1851 census in Lynesack & Softley, Co. Durham. HO 107, Piece 2386, Folio 1246, Page 19 shows John aged 33 an agricultural labourer born Cull Garth, Cumberland and his wife Mary aged 25 born Middleton-in-Teesdale. Their son Thomas is not shown but he appears as a visitor in Darlington.

She was listed as head of household in the 1861 census in Pity Me, Low Field, Woodham, Stockton. RG09 Piece 3696 Folio 85 Page 15. This entry is probably for our family. John agricultural labourer 44 from Cumberland, Mary 35, Thomas 13 born Shildon which matches 1881 Census & William 6 born Cleatlam.

She was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in Sand Bed, Lynesack & Softley, Hamsterley, Co. Durham. RG10 Piece 4940. John aged 55 a farmer of 30 acres and Mary aged 47. Lynesack is a few miles north-west of Raby Castle.

He was listed as head of household in the 1881 census in Eldon Village, Eldon, County Durham. RG11 Piece 4918 Folio 7 Page 8. Thomas is aged 33 a farm labourer born Shildon. Eleanor (spelt Ellinor) 26 born Bishop Auckland. Mary Annie 7 and John Thomas 9 both born Langley Dale, York and father John 64 widower, farm labourer.

He was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in Greenfield, Etherley, West Auckland, Co. Durham. RG12 Piece 4075 Thomas aged 43 a farmer, Ellenor 38, John 19, Mary 17 Thomas's father John a widower 74. I have a flyleaf from a bible on which is writen "Mary Annie Richardson Etherley 18/92" (presumably 1892). Below it written in pencil is "Low green Field farm".

John Richardson and Mary Gargett had the following children:

child 4 ii. William Richardson was born in Cleatlam, Co. Durham about 1854. Birthplace and year taken from 1861 Census. Cleatlam is between Staindrop and Barnard Castle. Free BMD has several entries the most likely of which is for Darlington district Ref. 10a 18 in the September quarter 1854. However, Cleatlam is in the Teesdale district but the only birth is in the June quarter 1853 Ref. 10a 139. He was listed as head of household in the 1861 census in Pity Me, Low Field, Woodham, Stockton. RG09 Piece 3696 Folio 85 Page 15. This entry is probably for our family. John agricultural labourer 44 born Cumberland, Mary 35 born Mid dleton in Teesdale, Thomas 13 born Shildon which matches 1881 Census & William 6 born Cleatlam.

He was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in Henderson Farm, Windlestone, Co. Durham. RG10 Piece 4930, Folio 10, Page 20 shows William a general servant aged 15 working for John Henderson. Place of birth is Cleatlam. Because of software limitations he is shown as head of household instead of servant.
