25. Alfred James4 French (Mary Ann3 Wilde, William2 Wild(e), William1 Wilde) was born in Sunderland, Co. Durham 4 July 1885. Details taken from family bible. Free BMD Sunderland 10a 599 September quarter 1885. Alfred died 16 May 1973 in 5 Deneside, Sacriston, Co. Durham, at 87 years of age. Copy certificate sent to me by granddaughter Mary Lax.

He married Hannah Breakwell in Chester-le-Street district, Co Durham, 3 January 1914. Details taken from family bible. Free BMD has an entry for both parties Ref. Volume 10A Page 919.

Hannah was born in Low Spennymoor, Co. Durham about 1889. Year of birth calculated from age at death. However, Free BMD has an entry for a Hannah Breakwell in the September quarter 1885 in the Auckland district Ref. Volume 10A Page 173, assuming she was born in Co. Durham. The 1911 Census says she was aged 22 (so 1888 or 1889) born at Low Spennymoor which would be in the Auckland district. Free BMD does not have an entry in 1888 or 1889 for a Hannah Breakwell.

Hannah died 20 January 1953 in Dryburn Hospital, Durham, at 63 years of age. Copy certificate sent to me by granddaughter Mary Lax. Lived at 26 West Parade, Sacriston, Co. Durham

She was listed as head of household in the 1911 UK Census in Hylton Street, Waldridge, Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham. RG14PN10401 RG78PN551 RD201 SD2 ED6 SN9 shows Hannah 22 single described as niece at home of Wilson and Mary Ann Stephenson. Because of software constraints Hannah is shown incorrectly as head of household.

He was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in 18 St Mark's Road North, Sunderland, Co. Durham. RG12 Piece 4128, Folio, 49, Page 19. Samuel aged 41 a coachman domestic servant, Mary 33, Newcombe 13, Mary 11, Selina 10, Harriet 7, Alfred 5, Ada 2 and Ruth 7 months.

He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in Wellington Row, Edmondsley, Co. Durham. RG13 Piece 4701, Folio 28, Page 10 shows Samuel aged 51, occupation a Coalmine Coachman, Mary aged 43, William 23 horse fodder labourer, Alfred J 15 coal mine driver, Ada 12, Ruth 10, May 7, Samuel 5 and Marha 2. Census says Samuel was born at Blackmorsend, Essex but 1881 Census says he was born in Wethersfield, Essex, which is circa 5 miles away. William born Plawsworth, Alfred J, Ada, & May born Sunderland, Samuel and Martha born Edmondsley.

He was listed as head of household in the 1911 UK Census in 6 Wellington Terrace, Edmondsley, Co. Durham. RG14PN30110 RG78PN1738 RD554 SD1 ED26 SN206 shows Samuel aged 61 a colliery day labourer above ground born Wethersfield, Essex, Mary 53 school caretaker married 35 years born Sunderland, Alfred James 25 coal miner on setter below ground born Sunderland, Ruth 20 assistant school cleaner born Sunderland, May 17 born Sunderland, Martha 12 born Edmondsley, Alfred James Sedgwick grandson 4 born Colburn Yorkshire and Newcomb William French Ord grandson 4 born Sacriston. Samuel and Mary had 10 children 2 of whom have died.

Alfred James French and Hannah Breakwell had the following children:

child 61 iii. Alfred James French was born in Chester-le-Street district, Co Durham 23 January 1917. Copy certificate issued at Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham district. Alfred died 10 January 1964 in Dryburn Hospital, Durham, at 46 years of age. Copy certificate sent to me by daughter Mary Lax.
